Connection is not purchased. Some of the best dates cost almost nothing — what they require is attention, not a budget. Here are ideas to steal:
Cook a cuisine you have never tried with ingredients already in your kitchen. Stargaze with a free sky-map app and a blanket. Home spa night — face masks, foot soaks, no phones. Museum or gallery free days, which most cities offer monthly. Sunset picnic with leftovers in a park. Board game tournament, best of five, loser does dishes. Living-room dance party to a playlist from the year you met. Photo walk — each of you shoots ten photos of the neighborhood, then compares. Library date: each picks a book for the other. Volunteer together for two hours. Comedy night at home with stand-up specials. Hike a new trail. Write each other letters to open in a year. Recreate your first date as cheaply as possible. Teach each other a skill — juggling, a chord, a recipe.
Make it a system, not a one-off: alternate who plans each week, with a $20 cap. Constraints breed creativity, and the planning itself becomes part of the fun. The only real rule: phones away. Presence is the whole point.
