The 10-Minute Check-In That Prevents Big Arguments

October 7, 2026 · Elizabeth Wilson

Big arguments rarely come out of nowhere. They are usually small frustrations that were never said out loud, compounding for weeks until something minor triggers an explosion. The antidote is a tiny daily habit: the 10-minute check-in.

Pick a consistent moment — after dinner, on an evening walk, before phones come out. Ten minutes, phones down. Each person answers three prompts:

1. One appreciation. Name something specific your partner did today that you noticed. "Thanks for handling the plumber call" beats a generic "thanks for everything."

2. One flag. Mention one small thing on your mind before it grows. "The credit card bill looked high this month — can we look at it Sunday?" said calmly today prevents a fight about it next month.

3. One plan. Confirm one thing about tomorrow: who is doing school pickup, what time dinner is, anything that needs coordinating.

Two rules make this work. First, never do it when either of you is exhausted, hungry, or rushing — reschedule instead of forcing it. Second, the check-in is for maintenance, not for solving deep problems. If a big issue surfaces, note it and schedule a longer talk. Trying to resolve everything in ten minutes is how check-ins die.

Couples who do this consistently report the same thing: the big talks get rarer, because there is less backlog to explode about.
